ABC premiered their redesigned state of the art TV3 studio on March 3, 2020 for Super Tuesday Election coverage. The studio is located in ABC’s news headquarters in New York.  Executive Vice President of Design, Dennis Size, lit the studio along with Associate Lighting Designer Alex Kyle.

The flagship studio was completely revamped to emulate the wrap around set and large scale lighting used in the 2018 midterm elections.  Seth Easter’s colorful scenic design surrounded the set with video walls, a couple of which move in and out, a circular video floor in the center for augmented reality graphics, and a T-shaped video wall hung above the set.  Size’s agile lighting design showcased ABC’s election coverage and enables the multiple news shows broadcast from TV3 to have their own distinct looks. The design team took on the challenge of completely redesigning the studio for the 2020 elections in the midst of the pandemic to give it a bigger more modern appearance.

ABC’s Tamron Hall invites viewers to engage in meaningful and entertaining discussions and connect with people who are shaping our world.  To establish this atmosphere, Executive Vice President of Design, Dennis Size, along with Lighting Designers Ariel Benjamin and Josh Windhausen, designed a balanced environment that is warm and inviting, but flexible enough to adjust the mood of the show for any given segment.

Season two of Tamron Hall premiered on Sept. 14, 2020 in ABC’s Studio TV2.  The show was rebranded in the midst of the pandemic with new graphics and altered scenic and lighting designs to reflect the new look. The set is draped in gold and pale blue backlit bands to create an intimate atmosphere where the host can speak with her guests on a variety of subjects from lighthearted topics like cooking segments, fashion shows, and musical performances to hard-hitting human-interest stories about survival, crime, and personal tragedy.  A large video wall behind Hall enables her to have a virtual audience and conduct interview segments while maintaining safe distance.  Commendations to our design team who worked through the unusual challenges presented by the pandemic to present a beautiful engaging talk show.

ABC News 2020 Presidential Town Hall with Joe Biden

Client

ABC / Disney

ABC hosted a Town Hall on October 15, 2020 with presidential candidate Joseph Biden entitled “The Vice President and the People.”  ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos moderated the event which took place at the Kimmel Theater in the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Executive Vice President of Design, Dennis Size, lit the Town Hall along with Gaffer Jon Goss, Programmer Teddy Sosna, and Assistant Lighting Designer Alex Kyle.

A unique aspect of this Town Hall was that each of the 22 Pennsylvania voters stood at their seat to ask former Vice President Biden questions.  Typically, the voter would have been escorted to a single Question and Answer Position to ask their question.  The change was due to COVID-19 health precautions and made for a more complicated production since it greatly increased the positions that were lit and the camera angles used.  The design team took on this challenge and carefully lit all positions for a memorable Town Hall experience.
